Following its modern and successful iteration of the 1956-59 BMW 507 known as the Z8, the Bavarian Motor Works turned to its longtime performance partner and neighbor Alpina for a limited-production run of more luxurious but no-less-capable roadsters. Exactly 555 Alpina V-8 Roadsters were specially configured for luxury grand touring with revised V-8 power and sequential-shift automatic transmission. This 2003 Alpina Z8 Roadster is one of 450 allotted for America, and it has traveled just 9,605 miles since it left the Alpina facility in Bavaria. Engraved on the plaque affixed between the driver and passenger seats is Production No. 215.
Alpina turned to its larger 5-series-derived Alpina B10 V-8 S for a powertrain fitting of its Z8 roadster. The 4.8L aluminum block and 32-valve cylinder-head DOHC V-8 with Bosch Motronic port fuel injection was good for a maximum 375 HP at 5,800 RPM and increased 383 lb-ft of torque at just 3,800 RPM. The Alpina F5 V-8 is backed by a ZF-based Switch-Tronic 5-speed automatic transmission with lockup torque converter and steering-wheel-mounted sequential-shift controls. Vented 4-wheel power disc brakes work with Alpina revised suspension damping for a more forgiving roadster experience. The largely unchanged Z8 roadster body is finished in Titanium Silver Metallic.
Inside more forgiving and softer black leather seats with power adjustment and Alpina stitching were designed for supple long-distance comfort over their pure-sport predecessors. Paddle shifters frame the Alpina-designed steering wheel over an instrument cluster with gear-position indicator and blue-face gauges. Styled door-sill plates add distinctive Alpina touches to the roadster interior, with convenience from power windows and locks. Alpina-styled 20-inch alloy Ronal wheels are equipped with low-profile tires for grand-touring road control.
