Any one of Carroll Shelby’s original small-block-powered Cobras is a special automobile. Add some performance-oriented provenance to the heady mix of style and speed baked into every car from Shelby American and you get a significant example of that special automobile. Such is the case with this 289-powered roadster, CSX2495. On its face it’s an outstanding, thoroughly restored—but very drivable—late-production leaf-spring Cobra. But, dive into its ownership record and you’ll discover that there’s only one with its claim to fame.

Thanks to the Shelby American Registry, we know that CSX2495 was billed to Shelby American on June 25, 1964, and shipped to Shelby’s Venice, California, assembly facility on July 10. Once completed, it headed east and was invoiced to Fort Lee Motors in Fort Lee, New Jersey, on October 21. Its first owner was the one who swapped the stock 4-barrel for the Webers, among other modifications. The detailed history of CSX2495, as documented in the Shelby American Registry, lists a number of previous owners, all of whom left their mark on the car in some way. One such owner, who bought it in 1977, was a man named Jim Inglese.

It was his first Cobra, and as he described it, “it had a really hot 289 with Weber carburetion. It accelerated like a rocket, but it drove very poorly under 2,500 rpm. I loved the carburetors, so I was determined to get them to work right.” “Determined” is one way to put it. Inglese spent a full year and a half studying and tuning those Webers until his efforts made it “a very pleasant car to drive.” The Cobra must have been fast, as Inglese drove it to win the 1978 Northeast Fall Rally in Massachusetts. All those months reworking the Webers also sowed the seeds for a new business.

At first, Inglese tuned Webers for fellow Shelby owners, but over the years that part-time business became Inglese Induction Systems, a fixture in the performance aftermarket known for getting stellar drivability from what could, in less experienced hands, be very finicky multi-carb systems. It was Inglese’s ownership of the Cobra that attracted current owner Carter Emerson to CSX2495 when he saw it for sale at Legendary Motorcar Company in Toronto. When Emerson bought it, the Cobra looked much like it does now. It had been through a ground-up restoration and was finished with black paint, a black interior and chrome wire wheels mounting correct Michelin XWX tires.

Emerson did make a change to the exterior, removing the front and rear tubular nerf bars that the factory installed to augment the upright bumperettes. This simple deletion makes the Cobra look more like the Competition models Shelby built in the era. (Those bars will be included with the car.) Under the hood is the car’s trademark 289 CI V-8, still equipped with what are understood to be Inglese’s test-bed Webers. Emerson said the car “ran kind of rough” when he bought it, so he took it to race car mechanic Chris Harrison of Harrison Auto Dynamics in Phoenix, Arizona. Harrison sorted out the problem, which turned out to be an issue with the Webers’ linkage.

He also replaced the Cobra’s aluminum-cased 4-speed manual transmission with a Tremec 5-speed, though the original 4-speed will be included with the Cobra along with an original Cobra top, original tool pouch and jack, an original Cobra owner’s manual and Shelby sales brochure.
