By any measure, this 2005 Porsche Carrera GT is a racer for the street. It was designed and developed by Porsche’s motorsports division, whose engineers based their work on the 1998 Le Mans-winning Porsche GT1. Its chassis and body are entirely composed of exotic directionally woven carbon fiber and aluminum honeycomb. It accelerates in an almost impossible rush, tearing past 60 MPH in 3.6 seconds and hitting 100 in another 3.4. It will climb past 200 miles per hour and will brake from 80 MPH to a standstill in 199 feet. Its V-10 engine’s low-rotating mass and tiny clutch make working the throttle akin to flipping an on-off switch.

On the track, the Carrera GT’s athletic prowess will astound, and if that’s not enough, its interior is appointed as fully as any production Porsche. It is excess beyond excess, which was exactly the point of its creation. The Carrera GT’s normally aspirated V-10 engine was originally conceived for the 1998 Le Mans effort. Porsche engineers adapted it to the Carrera GT by raising displacement to 5.7 liters to produce 605 HP at 8,000 RPM and 435 lb-ft of torque at 5,750 RPM, but the rest of their targets were already realized: the block and heads are of aluminum, and the oil and water passages are internal wherever possible to save the weight of hoses and fittings.

Porsche’s sophisticated VarioCam system regulates intake cam timing to maximize power across the operating range, and dry-sump oiling assures safe operation under the most extreme operating conditions, using no fewer than 10 pumps to assure proper circulation. A specially developed Porsche Ceramic Composite Clutch driven by a unique hollow input shaft (that eliminates the need for a flywheel) shave more weight from the driveline’s rotating mass, and their tighter dimensions enable the entire power unit to be placed lower in its carbon-fiber reinforced plastic cradle, thereby lowering the center of gravity.

This leading-edge power package drives a conventional 6-speed transverse manual gearbox operated by a light and extremely precise console-mounted shifter. Speaking of precision, the GT’s carbon-reinforced plastic (CRP) chassis is the very definition of that word, requiring almost 1,000 separate steps and a full week to complete. Computer designed to be virtually inflexible in service to the all-independent pushrod-actuated suspension, the 220-lb body and chassis structure are the first in production car history to be made entirely of CFP.

Forged aluminum pushrods, forged stainless-steel pivot levers, inboard-mounted coilover shock absorbers and upper-and-lower A-arms combine with featherweight forged magnesium wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires to minimize unsprung weight and confer racecar-grade handling on the GT, with 15-inch Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes onboard for monster stopping power and virtually zero fade.

While this 2005 Carrera GT’s technical features are clearly race-bred, its accommodations can only be described as sartorial: perfectly formed XT bucket seats, copious Terracotta leather upholstery, galvanized magnesium trim and excellent ergonomics—especially in the driver controls (highlighted by the 917-inspired Birch shift knob) and instrumentation, in which Porsche has long excelled. Air conditioning, power windows and Porsche’s excellent Online Pro CD Radio are standard features. And like the rest of this one-owner Silver Metallic uber-Porsche, the interior is virtually flawless.

Always garaged, meticulously maintained, driven just 1,481 miles and traditionally finished in Silver on Terracotta, this Porsche Carrera GT is a fine example of the world’s most successful supercar.
