First introduced in 1965 as the lesser priced alternative to the more expensive 911, the Porsche 912 was powered by a 1600cc flat-4 engine that carried over from the outgoing 356SC. While it didn’t have the same grunt as the 911’s new 2.0L flat-6 engine, both models shared the same unitized body platform, front suspension and rear suspension—all of which conspired to make the 912 a relative bargain. Furthermore, the brakes were also equal in swept area, with the exception of solid rotors on the 912 versus vented on the 911. Faced with a significant price difference between the two, many period buyers opted for the 912 based on some very compelling reasons.
First, it was lighter than the 911 by a whopping 238 pounds—a full 178 pounds of weight savings came from the flat-4 engine—and the 912 tended to handle best due to its optimal weight distribution. The venerable 4-cylinder engine also had a long-standing and well-deserved reputation for its reliability, durability and performance. These performance factors combined with the lower price made the 912 a rousing sales success, selling twice as many units as the 911. This 1968 Porsche 912 is factory optioned with a 5-speed manual transmission a 5-gauge VDO instrument cluster, chrome wheels and chrome hubcaps with the Porsche cloisonné crest.
Though currently equipped with an Audiovox cassette stereo, the original Blaupunkt radio is included. Wearing its correct Ivory White paint, this 912 conveys the iconic Porsche look of the late 1960s that helped build the legend of the brand. The black leatherette interior is a classic for the period, with features including a 4-spoke steering wheel with the butterfly horn ring and aluminum applique on the dashboard. This restored example is believed to have traveled a mere 11,993 miles since the restoration. The 912 comes armed with its original tool kit, factory books, owner’s manual and that great, classic Porsche body shape that won’t soon be forgotten.
