The early 1970s marked a peak period in Italian sports car design with the likes of Ferrari, Lancia, Maserati and Lamborghini all vying to one-up each other with ever-faster and more attractive models. As early as 1970, Lamborghini was laying the groundwork for a revolutionary new supercar worthy of replacing the then-aging Miura. Company founder Ferruccio Lamborghini and chief engineer Paolo Stanzani were in agreement that this new flagship would not only have to provide world-class performance but also make a bold styling statement that would truly set it apart from the competition.

The source for this bold styling statement came from Marcello Gandini’s radically wedge-shaped Bertone concept car, the Lancia Stratos Zero. Gandini took his futuristic, angular, cab-forward design and adapted it to fit around Stanzani’s all-steel space frame, which would house a midmounted, longitudinal, 3.9L V-12 engine designed by famed engineer Giotto Bizzarrini and was used in Lamborghini’s 400 GT and Espada. Dubbed the Lamborghini LP500 Countach, the prototype made its debut at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show and turned the automotive world on its collective head. With its wedge shape, steeply sloping nose and unique scissor doors, the Countach looked like something from the future.

Widely popularized in movies and television, the Countach evolved over its 16 years of production with just shy of 2,000 examples constructed in total. This very special 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary Edition is one of just six examples finished in Giallo Fly (yellow) over a Nero (black) leather interior. One of only 657 Countachs built to commemorate Lamborghini’s 25th anniversary, this special Countach features an even more aggressive styling package developed by Horacio Pagani. Under its rear deck, this rare carbureted Countach features a 5.2L, 4-cam, V-12 engine that breathes through six Weber downdraft carburetors and boots out 449 HP and 369 lb-ft of torque.

Mated to the 5-speed manual transmission, this powerplant can launch the 25th Anniversary Countach from zero to 60 MPH in just 4.7 seconds with a top speed of 183 MPH, making it one of the fastest Countachs ever produced. In December 2023, this Countach was the subject of an engine-out service completed at 38,710 kilometers by Auto Kremer in Horsching, Austria, documented with corresponding service records; the belts were replaced and gearbox were also overhauled at that time as well.
