This 2016 Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta represents the ultimate in Ferrari style, performance, technical advancements and exclusivity. Ferrari drew deeply from its well of technological expertise to produce the LaFerrari, the most sensational production road car ever to wear the Prancing Horse symbol.
Launched in 2013 and limited to 499 examples in Berlinetta form, the LaFerrari was sold out before production began, but following Ferrari tradition, the Maranello firm soon thereafter announced the LaFerrari Aperta, the designation translating to “open” after the Latin “apertura.” Introduced in October 2016 to commemorate Ferrari’s 70th anniversary, the LaFerrari Aperta is even more exclusive than its predecessor, with production limited to a mere 210 cars, 200 of which were reserved, not surprisingly, for Ferrari’s most passionate and faithful customers.
Like the LaFerrari, the Aperta employs the advanced technology born of the company’s Formula One hybrid powertrain and chassis design expertise. The Aperta shares the same hybrid powertrain as the LaFerrari, pairing the world’s most powerful V-12—a 6.3L DOHC 4-valve engine with 13.5:1 compression and F1-derived Dynamic Ram Effect induction rated at 789 HP—and a 161 HP electric motor using F1 energy recovery and application programming for a combined output of 950 HP at 9,000 RPM and 663 lb-ft of torque at 6,750 RPM.
Integrated with the V-12 by Ferrari’s F1-inspired HY-KERS (Hybrid Kinetic Energy Recovery System), the electric motor kicks in during low-speed acceleration and in the microseconds between shifts of the 7-speed dual-clutch F1 automatic gearbox to deliver fully linear, uninterrupted power. The numbers tell the story: 0 to 60 MPH in 2.4 seconds, 125 MPH in less than 7 seconds and a top speed of 217.5 MPH. The Aperta’s Brembo disc brakes integrate with the HY-KERS and use lighter calipers with a specific design designed to guarantee perfect heat dissipation from the new carbon-ceramic rotors.
The dynamic control systems incorporated into the Aperta’s active aerodynamics also remain the same as in the LaFerrari, including the large adjustable rear spoiler, movable diffuser flaps redirecting air for optimal downforce at any speed, and an incredibly efficient rear diffuser. Advanced computer controls also manage the Aperta’s double-wishbone front and multilink rear suspension, employing magnetorheological damping with twin solenoid controls, electronic stability control and E-Diff 3 electronic traction control for confident at-the-limit handling and excellent driver feedback.
Most significantly, Ferrari engineered the open-cockpit Aperta with an array of specific modifications designed to counter the increased flexing inherent in any roofless design, achieving the same torsional strength and structural robustness as the LaFerrari. Iconic Rosso Corsa paint coats this 2016 LaFerrari Aperta’s sleek coachwork and provides dramatic contrasting accents on the Pirelli P-Zero-shod 19-inch and 20-inch forged alloy wheels and brake calipers, the theme repeating on the exposed intake plenum and in the black leather and carbon-fiber interior.
Exterior options include Argento Nürburgring racing livery trim; carbon-fiber wheel caps, outside mirrors, lower trim and rear fog lamp; black sport exhaust tips; a front lift system; and a black carbon-fiber hardtop. The LaFerrari Aperta’s charger, books, manuals, tool kit and car cover are included, along with a set of driving gloves. On the interior of this pristine example, optional amenities include telemetry and track cameras, integrated audio with navigation and red headrest embroidery.
