Delivered new to the U.S. to an owner in Texas in May of 1981, the 512 BB presented here, bearing chassis number 35409, had been purchased by an enthusiast and collector of sports cars who paid $90,000 for the car at Auto Palace of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where the car was federalised for use in the United States. As stated on the purchase invoice, the odometer read just 400 kilometres. A further 314 kilometres were accrued in EPA testing.
Fascinatingly, the 512 BB would barely be driven over the next 33 years, remaining in storage in the owner’s garage, still wearing plastic on its doorsills. In 2014, chassis number 35409 finally rolled out of the garage in Texas, was purchased by its next owner and flown across the pond to the UK, where it has remained ever since. Importantly, in March of 2016, the car received a mechanical recommissioning, which included a full engine-out service and replacement of the cambelts and clutch.
Today, chassis number 35409 remains as one of the lowest-mileage 512 BBs in existence, having been driven just 820 km from new. Unrivalled in originality, this is a 512 BB worthy of inclusion in the world’s finest Ferrari collections.
Livrée neuve en 1981 aux États-Unis à un automobiliste du Texas, la 512 BB présentée ici, châssis n° 35409, a été achetée par un passionné et collectionneur de voitures de sport qui a payé pour l'acquérir 90 000 $ à Auto Palace de Pittsburgh, en Pennsylvanie, où elle a été adaptée aux règles fédérales pour pouvoir être utilisée dans ce pays. Comme le précise la facture d'achat, le compteur kilométrique indiquait tout juste 400 km. Au cours des essais pour l'Environmental Protection Agency, 314 km de plus ont été parcourus.
Il est fascinant de constater que cette 512 BB n'a été pratiquement pas utilisée au cours des 33 ans qui ont suivi : elle est restée à l'abri dans le garage du propriétaire, portant encore les protections de plastique sur les seuils de portes. En 2014, cette voiture n° 35409 est enfin sortie de son garage du Texas : elle a été achetée par son actuel propriétaire, qui l'a importée en Angleterre où elle est restée depuis. En mars 2016, la voiture a bénéficié d'une révision mécanique, avec une opération d'entretien complet du moteur incluant le remplacement des courroies de transmission et de l'embrayage.
Aujourd’hui, ce châssis n° 35409 correspond à une des 512 BB qui présente le kilométrage le plus faible de toutes celles qui sont encore en existence, avec seulement 820 km d'origine. Affichant un état d'origine sans équivalent, c'est une 512 BB qui mérite de prendre place dans les plus belles collections de Ferrari du monde.
