Penned by Filippo Sapino of Pininfarina, the 365 GTC/4’s flowing wedge shape was a significant departure from the more traditional profile of its predecessors when it debuted at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show. Proportioned like a two-seater coupe while cleverly incorporating fold-down rear seats, the GTC/4 effectively replaced two models, the 365 GTC and 365 GT 2+2. The “4” in GTC/4 designated quad overhead camshafts in its high-revving 4.4-liter V-12 engine, slightly detuned and less high-strung than that of the more aggressive 365 GTB/4, which shared its chassis. Ferrari produced only 500 examples of the 365 GTC/4 over eighteen months, the bulk of which were sold in the United States.
This US-spec 365 GTC/4 was produced in May 1972 and delivered new to Chinetti-Garthwaite Imports in Paoli, Pennsylvania wearing its current color scheme of Blu Ribot over Beige leather. The original owner, Constant Alexander Benoit, Jr. of Palm Beach, Florida, kept the car until 1977. In August of that year, it was listed for sale by FAF Motorcars in Tucker, Georgia and was purchased by a collector based in North Carolina named David E. Block, who would retain it for the next 40 years as part of a well-maintained collection. An official mileage statement dated 30 August 1977 listed mileage at 22,434.
The consignor was fortunate to become the next and only third caretaker of this remarkable GTC/4 after acquiring it in June 2017. With less than 38,500 miles indicated on the odometer at the time, he promptly had it serviced at Scuderia Performante in Malvern, Pennsylvania. In April 2018, the same shop overhauled the gearbox, both distributors, and all six Weber carburetors, powder-coated the valve covers, replaced all fluids, filters, spark plugs, and ignition wires, and had the rear package shelf and rear window surround reupholstered.
In May 2018, Scuderia Performante replaced the starter and battery, and in July 2020 the shop fitted a new, custom exhaust system, mounted Michelin XWX tires, and performed an oil change. Copies of invoices totaling nearly $48,000 for the work by Scuderia Performante are included in the sale, along with factory manuals and other literature, a tool kit, jacking equipment with bag, and copies of various documents, including the original title, past registration cards, inspection forms, the odometer statement, and a report by marque historian Marcel Massini.
Equipped from the factory with power steering, power windows, air conditioning, a Becker Mexico radio, and a suspension setup more compliant than that of its 365 GTB/4 sibling, the 365 GTC/4 is an imminently comfortable and capable cruiser, with an impressive top speed of 163 mph. Well preserved, lovingly maintained by a very short list of conscientious owners, and with 40,084 miles indicated at cataloguing time, this stellar example in factory-correct livery and riding on correct Borrani Cromodora wheels would be an ideal choice for the Ferrari enthusiast seeking a superb, unrestored grand tourer to be driven and enjoyed on any number of classic-car road rallies.
