Rolls-Royce of America began assembly at its U.S. plant in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1921, but it was with the introduction of the new Phantom of 1925 that American Rolls-Royces became increasingly distinguished from their UK counterparts. Along with technical differences, the American versions were often clothed in less formal style, notably by Brewster, the prestigious coachbuilder favored by the Vanderbilts, Astors and JP Morgan, among others. Featuring Brewster and Company coachwork, this navy blue and silver 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom 1 Newmarket Convertible Sedan is a late-production example with several Phantom II features.

As the name suggests it is both a convertible and a sedan by virtue of the removable window pillars that made it akin to a sedan in terms of weather proofing and comfort. In fact, in closed mode it was more akin to a limousine with its wind-up glass division—a highly unusual feature on a convertible. With pillars removed and the division lowered, it transformed into a sleek, luxury open tourer. The New Phantom, retrospectively known as the Phantom 1, was Rolls-Royce’s more powerful replacement for the immortal 40/50 Silver Ghost. The new, larger 468 CI (7668cc) pushrod overhead-valve inline-6 initially produced 108 HP.

From 1928, the Phantom 1 power unit was upgraded with the fitment of an uprated aluminum cylinder head to endow it with an impressive 90 MPH capability. To rein it in were 4-wheel servo-assisted brakes Notable differences in the American-built Springfield Phantom 1 included left-hand drive, a more modern central gear change and a manual one-shot central lubrication system that made maintenance a simpler matter than on British counterparts, which bristled with grease nipples that required individual and frequent attention. The British Phantom 1 had the fuel gauge at the tank, while many U.S. cars, as on this 1930 example, had the gauge on the dash—which is really where it’s needed.

Such is the rarity and desirability of the Newmarket convertible sedan that other Phantom 1s have been converted to this format, but that is not so in the case of this car possessing not only its original Brewster body but also the original chassis (No. S126PR) and engine, which together make it all the more deserving of its meticulous restoration undertaken by a marque expert and its CCCA Premier, Senior and Primary awards.
