Purpose-designed and methodically engineered by the Porsche factory under the guidance of Porsche and Audi Special Vehicles Manager Josef Hoppen to race in the SCCA D Production Championship during the late 1970s, this 924-based 933, also known to enthusiasts as a 924/933, is one of two cars specially built by Porsche in Germany. One example was shipped to racer “Doc” Bundy and the other car was shipped to fellow SCCA racer, Tom Brennan, who crashed it at Road Atlanta on October 18, 1980. A multiyear rebuild was undertaken, with the car scoring SCCA wins at Indianapolis Raceway Park and the June Sprints at Road America in 1982.
After the SCCA eliminated the D Production class, the car was converted to SCCA GT3 specification and went on to score three wins in SCCA competition in the 2004 and 2005 Mother’s Day Competition at Indianapolis Raceway Park, with the trophies accompanying the car. Finished in black with No. 54 Herman Miller racing livery, this 924/933 features a front bumper with Tom Brennan identifier. Power is delivered by a 1986cc inline 4-cylinder racing engine, bored 0.030 over and equipped with dry-sump lubrication and Weber carburetors, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission.
Finished in Almond White, the interior is equipped with a competition-approved roll bar, racing seat, RCI racing belts, a Momo steering wheel and a tachometer. Other racing highlights include a new fuel cell, 8-inch front and rear springs, competition suspension mounting points, modified front spindles with integrated race shocks, and rear Koni race shocks. Stopping power is via Wilwood Superlite 2 4-piston vented front disc brakes and Bremtec 4-piston vented discs in the rear. A rear spoiler provides downforce at speed. BBS wheels mounting Hoosier racing tries provide track contact. SCCA racing logbooks from the 1980s are included.
The cover car for the “Porsche’s D Production 924″ booklet, the Tom Brennan 924/933 was featured in the December 1980 issue of SportsCar magazine and discussed in detail for the June 1989 Porsche Panorama article entitled “Water-Cooled Winners: The 924 Kit Cars.” Sold on a bill of sale, the Brennan 1978 Porsche 924/933 is a fitting touchstone to Stuttgart’s commitment to proving the effectiveness of its new 924 on the track in Porsche’s crucial American markets.
