Debuted at the 1969 Frankfurt Auto Show as a 1970 model, the new Porsche 914 succeeded the outgoing 912 and was sold as the “VW-Porsche 914” by VW-Porsche GmbH in Europe and as the “Porsche 914” by Volkswagen of America. Rooted in sketches by Hans Gugelot and developed under Ferdinand A. “Butzi” Porsche, the 914 featured taut Karmann-built bodywork, a removable Targa roof, and initially, a mid-mounted, air-cooled 1.7L VW 4-cylinder engine, upsized by 1973 to 2.0L. In addition to its fuel-injected engine and 5-speed gearbox, the 914 boasted near-50/50 weight distribution and delivered outstanding handling.

The 914-6 was introduced in 1970, featuring a 125 HP Porsche flat-6 powerplant shared with the 911T, and with suspension upgrades also derived from the 911. Primarily intended to homologate the 914 with the FIA under Group 4––special grand touring cars––a 914-6 co-driven by Claude Ballot-Lena and Guy Chasseuil won the GTS class and finished 6th overall at the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans. In preparation for the 1970 Targa Florio, Brian Redman used a 914-6 to scout the vast and challenging Sicilian roads. While the 914-6 was discontinued after 1972, the 4-cylinder 914 was produced through 1975, and it was Porsche’s most successful model during its run.

Benefiting from a ground-up restoration by Classic Showcase in Oceanside, California, this 1972 Porsche 914-6 is powered by a 2.4L Porsche 911 flat 6-cylinder engine, equipped with two PMO 3-barrel carburetors, an MSD ignition system, a stainless muffler and headers, and a new alternator. The professionally dyno-tuned flat-6 delivers the power via a built 901 side-shift transaxle and RennShift performance shifter. Handling and stopping are via a Bilstein suspension, including a front sway bar, and 911SC brakes.

This 914-6 is finished in Porsche Racing Yellow paint and, of course, features the model’s signature removable Targa-style roof panel and surrounding roll bar––and is equipped with Dynamat sound deadening material. The unforgettable mid-engine body is equipped with new wiring, rubber and hardware. Other highlights include a Blaupunkt radio, 911 tachometer, and a center console with temperature and oil pressure gauges and a clock. Metal GT fender flares, fog lights, and Fuchs Porsche Turbo wheels mounting Bridgestone Potenza 225/50R15 tires complete this rare, low-production Porsche GT legend.
