While Porsche’s 911 is best known for its fabulous performance and unique rear-engine layout, the basic 911 design adapted extremely well to changing buyer demands and increasingly strict regulations throughout its successive generations. This adaptability ensured the 911’s continued dominance, not only on race tracks and in dealer showrooms but also in the Porsche boardroom and beyond, even in the face of the new front-engine Porsche models launched in the 1970s.
For the 1974-75 “G Series” 911 models, Porsche incorporated newly mandated safety features and simplified its lineup with both the “T” and “E” dropped, replacing them with the 911 coupe and Targa in 150 HP tune (143 HP SAE Net) as the base model. The Carrera was the top-of-the-line 911 model offered for 1974 and most of 1975 until the advent of the 911-based 930 Turbo. For U.S. markets, the 911 Carrera was slightly detuned in compliance with stricter U.S. emissions standards to 175 HP and included rear fenders with flared arches, wider wheels and tires, and usually “Carrera” graphics just above the rocker panels, plus a spoiler on the rear decklid.
Early 1974 model-year Carreras, including this example, featured the 1972 to ’73-style “ducktail” spoiler. A thrilling find as one of only 528 high-specification Carrera models built for the U.S. market in 1974, this unrestored “impact bumper” Carrera is powered by a 2.7L flat 6-cylinder engine paired with a Type 915 5-speed manual transmission. Features, options and amenities are numerous, including European-style front and rear bumpers and headlights, the newer black interior, sunroof, Blaupunkt radio, thick-grip Carrera-exclusive steering wheel, fog lights, heated rear windscreen and 15-inch Fuchs wheels.
