In 1964, Porsche introduced the 911 as a more powerful 6-cylinder successor to its popular 4-cylinder 356 sports car. While the 911 would go on to become one of the longest-running, continually evolving sports cars of all time, one of its more unique variations first appeared in 1967. For much of its production life, convertible versions of the 356 were one of Porsche’s most popular and best-selling variants. However, while Porsche wanted the new 911 to also be able to tap into this lucrative market, the company was wary of the United States National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s growing opposition to full convertibles and their lack of rollover safety.
Therefore, as a hedge against the rule makers, Porsche debuted the “Targa” version of the 911 in 1967. The new version of the 911 featured a stainless steel-clad roll bar behind the driver and passenger that could be enclosed for inclement weather by the combination of a removable roof panel and plastic rear window. A Southern California car since new, this 1971 Porsche 911T Targa is finished in black with a black leather interior with new black leather seats. The Porsche’s air-cooled 2.2L flat 6-cylinder engine, equipped with Zenith 40 carburetors, was rebuilt by noted Porsche specialist Alan Johnson Racing in San Diego, California, and comes with supporting receipts.
The engine’s power is transmitted to the Fuchs alloy wheels by Porsche’s unique “Sportomatic” clutchless 4-speed manual transmission, No. 210571, which has been serviced by Porsche specialists Black Forest, with the shift linkage rebuilt and the automatic clutch serviced during the process. The car also received a tune-up and carburetor service. Other noteworthy features of this stylish 911T include air conditioning, a correct dual-battery system, Bilstein shocks and strut inserts, tinted glass, a rear window defogger and a Jensen AM/FM cassette stereo. The car is also accompanied by an owner’s manual, receipts and service records, and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.
