At one point, Packard commanded a whopping 40% of the luxury car market, exporting more cars abroad than Cadillac and Lincoln combined. Its sales seemed unstoppable, and for good reason—Packard’s cars were largely without compromise. Fitted with high-quality materials, engineered like no other and styled beyond compare, who could resist? For modern motoring though, with traffic and main road speeds the way they are, classics like these can leave a lot to be desired, as although they are well designed and engineered, they can be challenging to drive.
Fitted with a Gibbon fiberglass replica body, this 1933 Packard Twelve Roadster has been tastefully modified to maintain the large majority of its original looks, but it enjoys the benefit of a modern 350 CI Chevrolet V-8 crate engine with a 4-barrel carburetor and Turbo-Hydramatic 350 transmission. It’s also been fitted with power brakes, power steering, power windows, a power seat, a power rumble seat and an AM/FM radio with cassette player, all making the Packard considerably more comfortable and infinitely easier to drive and maneuver, which likely spells a higher degree of enjoyability.
The interior looks like it’s ready for a sales brochure photography session, featuring light caramel-colored carpeting and leather upholstery, burlwood detailing and Classic Instruments gauges among other elements. Painted dark blue, the roadster is well dressed with chrome wire wheels with Packard-script centers wrapped with BF Goodrich Silvertown wide whitewall tires, as well as a folding rear luggage rack, a golf bag door, dual side-mount spares topped with accessory mirrors and the Goddess of Speed mascot atop the famous Packard grille, which is flanked by dual horns and accessory lamps atop the fenders.
The whole scene is demonstrative of how and why Packard dominated the market so easily. This one is just a little easier to drive and maintain.
