Many of today’s collectors and enthusiasts of great prewar automobiles rightly consider Packard’s Eighth Series models—particularly the Model 840 and Model 845 Deluxe Eights—to firmly rank among the company’s best automobiles of the era. Introduced on September 9, 1930, these top-of-the-line Packard automobiles came to market after the Model 826 and 833 Standard Eights and the Model 833 Individual Custom Eights, which debuted the previous month.
Riding on two generous wheelbase lengths, measuring 140.5 inches for the 840 and 145.5 inches for the 845, these models featured a forward cowl placement for a more rakish profile, creating one of the best platforms for a wide array of elegant bodies supplied by the Packard factory and the era’s finest custom coachbuilders. Mechanically, Packard’s Eighth Series represented the peak of development for Packard’s venerable inline 8-cylinder engine, displacing 319.2 CI with 100 HP in the Models 826 and 833, while the 384.8/120 HP engine powered the larger 840 and 845 Deluxe Eights.
Renowned for smoothness and near silence, Packard’s eights now benefited from improved manifolds and a valve arrangement derived from the 734 Speedster of 1930, while a fuel pump superseded the prior vacuum-tank system. Only 2,035 Model 840s were produced for Packard’s Eighth Series. This dashing 1931 Packard 840 Deluxe Eight 2/4-Passenger Convertible Coupe continues to benefit from a body-off restoration. It’s finished in two-tone Soft Lime Green and Dark Green paint and complements include a matching green interior and a black folding top featuring Victoria-style blind rear quarters and landau irons.
Ample power is delivered by a 343 CI inline 8-cylinder engine paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. Other highlights include a wooden dashboard mounting oval gauges, a rumble seat, a convenient golf club door that allows access to the storage compartment, and a folding luggage rack. Chrome trim includes Packard’s signature Goddess of Speed radiator mascot. Underpinnings include a live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs and 4-wheel mechanical drum brakes. Disc-type steel wheels and whitewall tires provide road contact.
