From its founding at the turn of the 20th century through the Roaring Twenties and well into the Depression, the Packard name was among the most revered in both the automobile business and the popular culture. Packard remained the national standard through most of the 1930s with the Twin Six engine and more coach-built specials than any other American manufacturer, but the Crash of 1929 had already foreshadowed a change in the company’s fortunes. The 1930-32 Light Eight was the first adjustment to the smaller market, but it was still too expensive to boost much-needed sales.
That came with the One Twenty, Packard’s first sub-$1,000 car, whose success led to the more compact Packard Six introduced in 1937. A state-of-the-art piece of engineering worthy of the Packard name, the new car featured all-steel coachwork, independent Safe-T-Flex front suspension and a 237/100 HP inline-6 derived from the One Twenty’s 8-cylinder engine. “The Most Famous Radiator Contour in the World” remained and, while lacking the Senior Packards’ outright opulance, the Junior Six was still an elegant automobile, as demonstrated by this exquisite 1938 Model 1189 Packard Six convertible coupe.
Restored in frame-off fashion over 20 years ago and maintained in a climate-controlled garage, it presents in Packard Dark Green with a Tan leather interior and remains in show-quality condition, with a correct canvas top and all chrome and rubber gaskets replaced or restored. The inline-6 flathead engine, increased to 245 CI for 1938, is matched to a Selective Shift synchromesh 3-speed transmission.
