The Maserati Ghibli was the hit of the 1966 Turin Auto Show. The car was designed by the brilliant young Giorgetto Giugiaro whilst he was working for Ghia, and it was conceived as a luxurious yet sporting GT car that was ideal for jaunts across the continent. Production of the Ghibli began with a fastback coupé in April 1967, which was joined by the spyder in 1969. A race-bred, mid-mounted, 4,719-cc V-8 engine with dry-sump lubrication and two chain-driven camshafts per cylinder bank powered the Ghibli, resulting in the car producing 330 hp.
Chassis no. AM115/S 1233 is one of the very desirable 125 factory-built spyders. According to information obtained from the Maserati factory, it was manufactured in December 1970 with the 4.7-litre engine, and it was originally finished in Verde Gemma over a white leather interior. It was delivered new to the U.S. before becoming part of an extensive private European collection.
The car has recently been refinished in black, but an inspection shows great authenticity throughout, particularly in the original, correctly coded Borrani chrome wire wheels, which are shod in Michelin 225/70 VR 15 tyres and include a matching spare in the boot. The chrome and Sekurit glass found throughout appear original, with only gentle use, and although it appears to be reupholstered, the boot presents nicely.
The interior is believed to be wholly original, with consistent, gentle wear from use to all surfaces, but it displays a very nice dashboard and seats and is equipped with a Becker Mexico radio with its correct manuals and documents. Whilst the factory information lists the car as originally delivered with an automatic transmission, a five-speed manual gearbox is presently installed, marking a desirable upgrade for sporty driving in true Maserati fashion.
The Ghibli Spyder is considered by many to be one of the finest open grand touring cars Maserati has ever produced.
La Maserati Ghibli était la star du Salon de Turin 1966. Dessinée par le jeune et talentueux Giorgetto Giugiaro alors qu'il travaillait chez Ghia, elle était conçue comme une GT luxueuse et sportive, idéale pour les voyages à travers le continent. La production de la Ghibli a commencé en avril 1967 sous la forme d'un coupé profilé, complété en 1969 par le Spyder. Monté en position centrale-avant, son moteur V8 de 4 719 cm3 était issu de la compétition ; avec sa lubrification par carter sec et ses quatre ACT entraînés par chaîne, il développait 330 ch.
Le châssis n°AM115/S 1233 correspond à l'un des très désirables Spyder usine, dont la production s'est limitée à 125 exemplaires. Selon les informations fournies par l'usine Maserati, il est sorti des ateliers en décembre 1970 avec le moteur 4,7 litres et présentait une teinte "Verde Gemma" avec intérieur en cuir blanc. Il a été livré neuf aux États-Unis avant de faire partie d'une importante collection européenne.
La voiture a récemment reçu une peinture noire, mais une inspection a montré une grande authenticité à tous points de vue, en particulier du côté des jantes Borrani d'origine, qui comportent le code correct et sont chaussées de pneus Michelin 225/70 VR 15. Cette remarque concerne aussi la roue de secours. Les chromes et les vitrages Sekurit paraissent d'origine, ne montrant que de discrètes traces d'usage et, bien que ses garnitures semblent refaites, le coffre offre une belle présentation.
L'intérieur est sans doute complètement d'origine et montre une usure homogène et modérée de tous les cuirs, tout en affichant des sièges de belle facture et un tableau de bord de qualité, équipé d'un autoradio Becker Mexico. La voiture est accompagnée des manuels et documents corrects. Bien que les informations de l'usine indiquent qu'elle a été livrée neuve avec une transmission automatique, elle est aujourd'hui équipée d'une boîte manuelle à cinq rapports, ce qui permet une conduite plus sportive, dans le plus pur style Maserati.
La Ghibli Spyder est souvent considérée comme une des meilleures GT décapotables que Maserati ait jamais produit.
