Featuring beautifully flowing bodylines and Jaguar’s powerful new DOHC XK engine, the XK120 revolutionized sports cars at its historic debut at the September 1948 London Motor Show debut. Masterfully styled by Jaguar Founder William (later Sir William) Lyons, the breathtaking new roadster was not initially intended for series-production. In fact, it was designed and built merely to attractively showcase Jaguar’s all-new DOHC XK inline 6-cylinder engine, while its intended recipient, the new Mark VII saloon, was readied for production. However, fierce demand dictated production of the XK120, which commenced in 1949.
Named XK120, denoting its engine type and blistering factory-claimed top speed, the new Jaguar’s performance was soon confirmed by test driver Ron Sutton’s 132 MPH blast in a lightly modified example on a Belgian highway in 1949. A huge boost to Britain’s postwar “Export or Die” economy, the XK120 was the cornerstone of Jaguar’s racing dynasty, including five 24 Hours of Le Mans wins (1951, 1953, 1955-57). It also served as an early mount for many future racing legends including Britain’s Sir Stirling Moss and America’s Phil Hill. Production continued into 1954, with the Roadster supplemented by the Fixed Head Coupe in 1951 and Drophead Coupe in 1953.
As few as 2,672 XK120 Fixed Head Coupes (FHC) were produced in all from 1951 to 1954, with the model featuring unforgettable styling and an exquisite wood- and leather-trimmed interior compartment. Squarely aimed at Jaguar’s lucrative export markets, the overwhelming majority of FHC models produced were shipped new to North America. Finished in Suede Green over green leather upholstery accented by a handsome burled walnut dash and door cappings, this factory left-hand drive, U.S.-specification example bears Chassis No. 681179, Engine No. W84228 and Body No. J3200.
The matching-numbers 3.4L DOHC inline 6-cylinder engine, mounting twin SU side-draft carburetors, is paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox. Desirable highlights include a proper Lucas electrical system, Smiths instruments, sleek rear fender skirts and 16-inch painted steel wheels mounting trim rings, center caps and bias-ply 6.00-16 blackwall tires. A spare, roadside jack and lug wrench are mounted within the rear boot. Documents include historic registrations, receipts and photographs.
