Featuring bold and decidedly modern styling, the new 22nd Series Packard models debuted in August 1947 as the company’s first all-new postwar automobile designs. The dashing Convertible Victoria body style stood at the top of the Packard model range, which gained high-profile earned acclaim from the New York Fashion Academy as the influential organization’s Car of the Year award winner for 1948. While the Packard inline 8-cylinder engine certainly delivered robust power for Packard’s sophisticated new postwar chassis, more is certainly better, especially for effortless enjoyment in today’s traffic.
This handsomely presented 1948 Packard Super 8 Convertible Victoria is a great case in point, offered from single ownership for the past decade by NBA superstar Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Legendary as one of the NBA’s all-time leading point scorers over his distinguished 20-year NBA career spanning 1969-74 with the Milwaukee Bucks and 1975-89 with the Los Angeles Lakers, Abdul-Jabbar is a six-time NBA champion player and two-time NBA championship-winning assistant coach.
The league’s only six-time MVP and a 19-time NBA All-Star player, Abdul-Jabbar is a true Renaissance Man off the basketball court who trained in martial arts under Bruce Lee, acted in films, was named a U.S. global cultural ambassador in 2012 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. One of 4,750 Packard Super 8 Convertible Victorias built for 1948, Abdul-Jabbar’s example continues to benefit from restoration and thoughtful modern updates tor driving pleasure.
A 454/425 HP GM V-8 engine delivers ample power and confident performance in conjunction with a GM Turbo-Hydramatic 700R4 automatic transmission and 9-inch Ford rear end, with stopping delivered by power front disc brakes, directional control via power steering gear, and upgraded handling with the suspension equipped with front and rear sway bars. Finished in black paint with a matching black canvas convertible top and a black snap-on boot cover, the elegant Packard features a refinished interior with individual Glide front bucket seats to better accommodate Kareem’s height. The original front seat is also included in the sale of the vehicle.
Other updates include a conversion of the power window lifts to electric motors and installation of a new power-operated convertible top and a refreshed power-top system including a new pump, wiring and switch. Heightened comfort is provided by air conditioning, and additional entertainment is delivered by an updated AM/FM stereo unit with Bluetooth connectivity. Other desirable features include Packard’s signature Cormorant hood mascot, a vacuum-powered antenna, twin fender-mounted side mirrors, a driver’s side spotlight, a trunk-mounted battery and chrome wire wheels mounting correct Packard-scripted hubcaps and a set of period style whitewall tires.
