Launched in 2014 in direct competition with hybrid supercars developed by archrivals Porsche and McLaren, the stunning LaFerrari continues to inspire shock and awe among all fortunate enough to experience it directly. While the LaFerrari would have already delivered staggering performance from its unique 789 HP V-12 internal-combustion powerplant, integration with the F1-derived HY-KERS hybrid system represents the future of elite supercar powertrain technology.

Internally known as “F150 Mulotipo MP1,” this 2012 LaFerrari second-phase, or “second family,” prototype is an important milestone in the LaFerrari program, based upon a preproduction LaFerrari chassis and central “tub” structure in technical carbon fiber. Serving as a development prototype between March 2012 and August 2013, MP1 was the LaFerrari prototype platform used by the engineering artists at Ferrari to integrate the various mechanical systems into their new masterpiece and refine them to production reality.

Based upon a preproduction chassis and central “tub” in technical carbon fiber, the prototype drivetrain of MP1 was based on the final layout arrived at by Ferrari’s engineers for LaFerrari. Power is delivered by the Type F140FD second-generation V-12 LaFerrari engine and prototype hybrid HY-KERS (Hybrid Kinetic Energy Recovery) system, cradled within MP1’s prototype engine-bay layout.

In addition to the massive performance potential of the LaFerrari’s 6.3L/789 HP, DOHC, 48-valve V-12 engine, the oil-cooled electric motor resides at the rear of the LaFerrari’s 7-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission and, in production form, delivers an additional 161 HP with a low-mounted, liquid-cooled, lithium-ion battery pack storing electrical power and serving as a stressed structural member. Electronic controls activate the electric motor, providing a turbo-like boost effect for nearly instantaneous throttle response. Stealthy in Matte Black, the prototype body and trim are unique to MP1 and not derived from any other Ferrari cars.

Likewise, fitting its mission as a prototype used to integrate the mechanical systems, the interior of MP1 is spartan, yet includes carbon fiber panels, Plexiglas windows and a custom-fabricated dash with LaFerrari digital display. White vinyl roundels and Pirelli graphics complete the exterior, along with 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels mounting Pirelli P-Zero tires. The series of hardworking, developmental test mules used by Ferrari in the LaFerrari developmental process serve today as automotive artworks that aptly celebrate and document the undeniable engineering artistry from the chassis and mechanical systems, to the car’s finalized packaging.

That these cars were ever offered to Ferrari customers in the first place makes them a true rarity and coveted collector piece. The car that proved Ferrari’s amazing HY-KERS powertrain system, MP1 is a singular prototype and an irreplaceable link in the LaFerrari development process. As such, it provides a tangible link to the renowned engineering and technical prowess, balanced by sheer artistry in every detail, that continues to define Ferrari today.
