Debuted in late 1959 alongside the Silver Cloud II, the elite Phantom V was Rolls-Royce's largest and most opulent model. Offering a chassis measuring 12 inches longer than the long-wheelbase Silver Wraith, the Phantom V was purpose-built for the few specialist coach builders remaining in business. Powering the Phantom V was the same all-alloy 6,230cc V8 engine and General Motors' 4-speed Hydramatic automatic transmission. Riding on independent front suspension and rear leaf springs, the Phantom V also included power steering and large drum brakes. Just 516 Phantom Vs were built in various H.J. Mulliner, Park Ward, and James Young body designs before the model was superseded in 1968.
Examples built from 1963 forward benefited from the improved Silver Cloud III engine and styling was attractively updated with a new quad-headlamp arrangement and revised radiator grille. Numbered 5VD23, this 1965 Rolls-Royce Phantom V was sold new in the U.K. to Capt. George E. Coles Esq. of Campden Farm Estates Ltd. Bodied by Mulliner Park Ward to Design 2003 with a glass division window, 5VD23 is finished in black with tan leather interior upholstery and features a striking burled wood interior trim and rare factory air conditioning.
A considerable amount of work is reported to have been completed by U.K. specialists before its last offering for sale in October 2022, including an interior refresh with attention to the leather and woodwork; a brake refresh, including a new master cylinder, brake booster and hoses; a new distributor and ignition coil, replacement of the fuel pump and fuel system flush, and servicing. The Phantom V was featured in the popular 2016-23 Netflix series "The Crown" in scenes where the Phantom carries (then) Prince Charles (played by Josh O'Connor) and Diana, Princess of Wales (portrayed by Emma Corrin).
It was also used in the music video for Liam Gallagher's song "Once," where Gallagher plays a chauffeur to soccer star Eric Cantona.
