Throughout its existence, Porsche production has included numerous homologation specials engineered and built to meet international competition requirements while remaining legal for road use. The otherworldly Carrera GT was the planned successor to the mighty 911 GT1 racer of the late 1990s, with development initiated in 1999. While FIA rule changes frustrated its endurance-racing plans for the new car, Porsche forged ahead, and when production ended in May 2006, some 1,270 examples left Porsche’s new facility in Leipzig, Germany, 604 of which were destined for America. Powered by a midmounted 5.7L/605 HP V-10 engine, the Carrera GT was a ferocious performer.

Acceleration from rest to 60 MPH comes in just 3.8 seconds, with the 100 MPH mark shattered in less than 7.0 seconds and a top speed of 205 MPH. While never intended for the dragstrip, the Carrera GT also delivers 11.4-second elapsed times over the quarter mile. Power delivery is via a 6-speed manual gearbox/rear transaxle, controlled with a simple yet elegant beech wood gearshift knob. Technical specifications remain stunning, beginning with a competition-style, carbon-fiber and aluminum monocoque “tub” and subframe structure safety design.

Clutch and brake components employ strong and lightweight ceramic composite materials, and both the engine and transmission mounts are made of carbon reinforced plastic material. Underpinnings include pushrod-activated inboard suspension up front. Even the Carrera GT’s massive 19- and 20-inch wheels are made from ultra-lightweight forged magnesium. Similar to other contemporary Porsche models, an automated rear wing deploys above 70 MPH, providing additional downforce and stability.

Perhaps MotorWeek host John Davis summed it up best: “The Carrera GT is the best motivation to get rich that we’ve ever driven.” Finished in GT Silver, this example is offered with the odometer reading just 786 miles. A multitude of desirable features includes carbon fiber removable roof panels and dark gray leather seats, a galvanized magnesium center console and bucket XT seats. Choice amenities include air conditioning and a Porsche Online Pro AM/FM/CD radio. Xenon headlamps light the way. Ground effects maximize downforce and handling at speed with the undertray and rear diffuser.

A two-chamber stainless steel exhaust system delivers a thrilling note, and Porsche ceramic composite brakes mounting yellow-finished calipers reside behind the Carrera GT’s five-spoke magnesium wheels.
