Without doubt, one of the most interesting and capable of all iterations of Porsche’s 993-generation 911 is the comprehensively uprated, 4-wheel drive Carrera 4S. Powered by a naturally aspirated flat-6 engine developing a factory-rated 282 HP with Porsche’s innovative VarioRam intake system and paired with a simpler and lighter version of Porsche’s all-wheel drive system, the Carrera 4S shared its wide rear fenders, bumpers, huge red-painted 4-piston brake calipers, 18-inch Turbo-look alloy wheels and ultra-low-profile tires with the 911 Turbo.
Many published road tests documented the electrifying performance of the Carrera 4S, with published tests citing 0-60 MPH acceleration in 5.2 seconds and 0-100 MPH in 13.2 seconds. Just 6,948 examples of the C4S were produced for the 1996-98 model years. Heightening desirability and collector interest, the 993-generation Porsche 911 was the last to feature an air-cooled engine. Benefiting from a recent partial restoration at a cost of $17,150, this Carrera 4S Coupe is powered by a 3.6L SOHC flat 6-cylinder engine rated at 282 HP and 250 lb-ft of torque and mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, all-wheel drive and a limited-slip differential.
Finished in Polar Silver with a black leather interior, the Porsche is highly equipped with a power sunroof, updated front and rear stabilizer bars, and reupholstered power height-adjustable front seats. Mechanical service includes refinished top-side engine components, recharged air conditioning and replacement of the cabin air filter, installation of a new battery, refinished brake calipers and new brake fluid for the ABS-5 antilock braking system. Other work includes installation of new front hood struts, a new alternator, an oil and filter change, installation of Bosch FR-LDC spark plugs, bleeding of clutch hydraulics, new belts and replated undercarriage hardware.
Mechanical highlights include self-adjusting hydraulic valve lifters and the DME engine management system with dual knock sensors and OBD-II diagnostics. The paint was touched up as required and exterior highlights include fog lights, an automatic rear spoiler, power headlight washers, power steering and remote central locking with alarm, LED warning light and remote. Further highlights include an AM/FM/cassette stereo with six speakers and a remote CD changer, power-adjustable heated side mirrors, power windows, fold-down rear seats, front airbags, three-point seatbelts, analog gauges with warning lights, and a 19.4-gallon polymer fuel tank.
