Coincident with the announcement of the all-new 991 series 911 scheduled for 2012, Porsche also showed that its outgoing 997 platform was still a force to be reckoned with, churning out an astounding number of 997 variants that culminated in the stupendous 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS, a twin turbo sledgehammer Porsche’s press department heralded as “the fastest and most powerful road-going sports car ever built in the history of Porsche.” They weren’t exaggerating; the GT2 RS was specifically aimed at reclaiming the lap record at the Nürburgring, and it was built to carry Porsche’s heaviest armaments into the quest for superiority at the Green Hell.
With 620 HP on tap and a curb weight of 3,020 pounds, the new GT2 RS was 90 HP stronger and 154-pounds lighter than before, giving it the best horsepower-to-weight ratio in its class. Because of the 3.6L twin turbo flat-6’s overwhelming power, the GT2 RS was available only with a single-plate clutch and a track-oriented, close-ratio 6-speed manual gearbox with Porsche’s signature short-throw shifter.
The GT2 RS features a fully adjustable all-independent strut suspension that is supplemented with Porsche Adaptive Suspension Management (PASM), unique anti-roll bars, specific engine mounts, recalibrated Porsche Stability Management (PSM) and specially developed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires on pin-drive wheels for incredible handling, and Porsche Composite Ceramic Brakes (PCCB) provide truly impressive stopping power. The GT2 RS benefited from Porsche’s persistence in shaving weight from every conceivable component, including removing 9 pounds from the interior carpeting.
The result of all this effort is a car that will accelerate alongside the fabled Carrera GT, with unrelenting acceleration generating a full g almost all the way to its 205 MPH terminal speed.
