Indeed, no Porsche collection can be truly complete without one of these groundbreaking models which started it all. According to the Porsche-issued Kardex certificate on file, this 356 Pre-A, Chassis no. 51999, was completed at the Zuffenhausen-based Porsche works during April of 1954 as one of 1,363 Coupés produced that year. While the original engine (no. 32898) is no longer with the car, the correct 546 type engine, 1.500cc, no. 30162/U, (Porsche factory-supplied exchange engine), is fitted. The car also retains the desirable split-case gearbox and the correct 6V electrical system.
Further records indicate that this car was shipped to the famous Max Hoffman Porsche dealer of New York in 1954, for use by Mr Plummer. (Some sources claim it could be the actor, Christopher Plummer). While its history in the United States is not documented, the car was later imported to Italy in 1988 (customs document and Porsche AG letter on file) and the new owner commissioned a restoration in 2010, which was completed by Porsche specialist Giro Classico/Vicenza (numerous photographs of the work on file), returning the rare, early Porsche 356 to its former glory.
Finished in elegant Ivory over a tastefully trimmed beige interior, the clean Reutter bodywork presents with the understated charm that suits an early Pre-A so well. The dash-mounted Telefunken radio was also restored, as were the delicate metric instruments situated in the distinct early Pre-A dashboard. In 2019, this Porsche was acquired by a French collector who, in 2023, commissioned a professional service and engine/gearbox overhaul at JB Classic Cars in The Netherlands (detail and invoice on file). The current Belgian owner registered this early 356 Pre-A in Belgium with a clean technical report (documents on file).
Today this rare Porsche is a beautiful example inside and out and would surely be welcomed to many Porsche events or Concours d'Elegance. This Pre-A 356 Knickscheibe Coupé beautifully demonstrates the pure and clean design of these early Porsche cars. Indeed, no Porsche collection can be truly complete without one of these groundbreaking models which started it all.

- Proposée avec une copie du Kardex historique Porsche La légendaire 356 du Dr Ferdinand Porsche a vu le jour pour la première fois dans un petit atelier à Gmünd, en Autriche, en 1948.
L'augmentation de la demande entraîna, en 1950, le transfert de la production à Stuttgart, où ces voitures désormais dotées d'une carrosserie en acier étaient assemblées par la Karosserie Reutter. Initialement construites avec un pare-brise en deux parties, leur style fut ensuite revu en 1952 avec un pare-brise d'une seule pièce, plus moderne, dit « bent-window ». Il est certain qu'aucune collection Porsche ne saurait être véritablement complète sans l'un de ces modèles fondateurs, à l'origine de toute l'histoire de la marque.
Selon le certificat Kardex délivré par Porsche et versé au dossier, cette 356 Pre-A, châssis n° 51999, a été achevée à l'usine Porsche de Zuffenhausen en avril 1954 comme l'un des 1 363 coupés produits cette année-là. Si le moteur d'origine (n° 32898) n'est plus présent dans la voiture, celle-ci est équipée d'un moteur de type 546 de cylindrée 1 500 cm3, n° 30162/U, conforme au type d'origine (moteur d'échange fourni par l'usine Porsche). La voiture conserve également sa boîte de vitesses à carter en deux parties, recherchée, ainsi que son système électrique correct en 6 volts.
D'autres archives indiquent que cette voiture fut expédiée en 1954 au célèbre concessionnaire Porsche Max Hoffman de New York, pour être utilisée par M. Plummer. (Certaines sources avancent qu'il pourrait s'agir du célèbre acteur Christopher Plummer.) Si son historique aux États-Unis n'est pas documenté, la voiture fut ensuite importée en Italie en 1988 (document douanier et lettre de Porsche AG au dossier) et son nouveau propriétaire a restauré en profondeur la voiture en 2010, achevée par le spécialiste Porsche Giro Classico, à Vicenza (nombreuses photographies des travaux au dossier), redonnant à cette rare Porsche 356 des débuts sa présentation d'origine.
Présentée dans une élégante teinte Ivory avec un intérieur beige sobrement garni, la carrosserie Reutter, proprement restaurée, présente le charme discret qui convient particulièrement bien à une Pre-A. L'autoradio Telefunken monté sur la planche de bord a lui aussi été restauré, de même que les délicats instruments métriques logés dans le tableau de bord spécifique aux premières Pre-A. En 2019, cette Porsche a été acquise par un collectionneur français qui, en 2023, a confié une révision professionnelle ainsi qu'une réfection du moteur et de la boîte de vitesses à JB Classic Cars, aux Pays-Bas (détail et facture au dossier).
L'actuel propriétaire belge a immatriculé cette 356 Pre-A en Belgique avec un contrôle technique vierge (documents au dossier). Aujourd'hui, cette rare Porsche se présente comme un bel exemplaire, tant à l'intérieur qu'à l'extérieur, et trouverait naturellement sa place lors de nombreux événements Porsche ou concours d'élégance. Cette 356 Pre-A Coupé Knickscheibe illustre avec justesse la pureté et la sobriété du dessin des premières Porsche. En effet, aucune collection de Porsche ne saurait être véritablement complète sans l'un de ces modèles révolutionnaires qui ont marqué le début de son histoire.
