This charming and evocative 1953 Porsche 356 coupe was a class winner at the prestigious Cavallino Classic Mar-a-Lago at Palm Beach, Florida in January 2015. The year 1953 was a crucial one for the entire Porsche enterprise. Fresh from a solid 8th overall in the 1952 Carrera Panamericana. Porsche drivers Helmut Potensky and Walter Schluter set their sights on the 1953 FIA European Touring Championship for production sports cars, winning the important Alpine Rally in Potensky’s own 356 coupe and locking the title with a 3rd place finish in Lisbon in a chopped-roof works-built Gmund coupe.
Porsche racers were modifying their cars with all manner of tricks from aluminum body parts to multiple carburetion and higher compression. Young German racer Hans Herrmann showed his virtuosity in a Porsche at the Mille Miglia and the Nürburgring, and in New York City Austrian-born entrepreneur Max Hoffmann was busily building his automotive import business in large part by selling these strange new cars from Germany to fascinated American customers. A very early pre-A 356, this beautifully restored 1953 coupe exemplifies the type of Porsche that would have graced Hoffmann’s Madison Avenue showroom and features terrific fit and finish.
As documented in its Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, it is one of very few finished at the factory in Black. Topped with a rare Golde sunroof with Tan canvas cover, and powered by a dual-carburetor 1.5L flat-4 with 4-speed gearbox. Nicely dressed with chromed hubcaps and wide Whitewall tires and sporting a rare and very cool Telefunken radio, this prize-winning 356 coupe would be a cornerstone car in any Porsche collection.
