Packard dominated America’s fine-car market for much of its history and its renowned Sixth Series models of 1929 epitomized the affluence and style of the Roaring Twenties with an all 8-cylinder lineup. Accordingly, the former Six was replaced by the Standard Eight on two slightly longer wheelbase lengths as the core models, bettered by the Custom Eight and Deluxe Eight lines. Riding upon commanding wheelbase lengths, the 640 Custom Eight and 645 Deluxe Eight shared a 385 CI inline 8-cylinder engine producing 105 HP—Packard’s most powerful, with the exception of the sporting but short-lived 626 Speedster.
A truly dizzying array of available body styles was available, the most desirable of them featuring basic styling cues by Raymond Dietrich. As one of the most respected body designers of the celebrated Classic Era, Raymond Dietrich was also one of the most influential. Following stints in Europe and at Brewster and LeBaron, he formed Dietrich, Inc., where his smart and elegant designs predictably attracted the attention of top Packard management. Soon, Packard became one of Dietrich’s best customers. Lacking an in-house styling department, Packard incorporated Dietrich design cues into its production cars, and after 1933, all open Packard models built carried Dietrich body tags.
As such, the names Dietrich and Packard remain virtually inseparable to marque enthusiasts today. Restored in July 2021, this 1929 Packard Custom Eight Runabout benefits from covered garage storage since completion. Power is delivered by Packard’s renowned 385 CI inline 8-cylinder engine, which is equipped with a downdraft carburetor and paired with a 3-speed manual transmission. Other mechanical highlights include a semi-floating rear axle, semi-elliptic leaf springs front and rear, and mechanical drum brakes. A true Jazz Age icon, this Packard Custom Eight is handsomely finished in two-tone light blue and dark blue paint with a red interior and cream-painted wire wheels.
Additional features include Packard’s signature Goddess of Speed radiator mascot, front bumper-mounted driving lights and a rear-mounted spare tire. A Packard Eight Information book is also included.
