In road going form, the R32 was powered by a twin-turbo RB26DETT in-line six allied with a sophisticated 4WD system and HICAS all-wheel steering, the R32 was a devastating road car. Production of the legendary R32 spanned 1989 to the advent of the R33 evolution of the Skyline series debuted in August 1993, ushering in a wide array of welcome stylistic, mechanical and safety enhancements. R33 styling was penned by Kozo Watanabe and production ran 1993-98. In 1995, an R32 GT-R driven by Motoharu Kurosawa became the fastest road-legal production car on the Nürburgring's hotly contested Nordschleife circuit, a record broken in 1996 by an even mightier R33 GT-R V-Spec model, driven by Dirk Schoysman.
THE CAR OFFERED
RUF is to Porsche, the same way Shelby is to Ford. This is a great comparison to what Tommykaira is to Nissan. Founded in 1968, Tomita Auto was the start of what would eventually become Tommykaira, a well-respected Japanese car tuning house as well as a vehicle manufacturer. Tommykaira was launched in 1986 by its founders Tomita Yume Koujou and Kikuo Kaira, which is where the moniker Tommykaira came to fruition.
Tommykaira was an established tuner, to which point they would receive a brand-new vehicle, in this case a Nissan Skyline GT-R, and offer its clients (3) stages of treatment, the entry "Look" package, the median "Basic" package and finally the rarest package of them all, their flagship variant called "Full Spec R". This beautifully well-kept R33 GT-R offered here is one of the very few "Full Spec R" packages.
The Sonic Silver (KR4) Series 2 R33 Skyline GT-R on offer here is equipped with the top-of-the-line package offered for these models. It's believed that just 16 "Full Spec R" models were built, with this being one of those very few. The "Full Spec R" package consists of a bespoke aero kit including front bumper, side skirts, rear bumper and a rear spoiler with a carbon fiber center section. The car was then fitted with TK branded multi-piece 18-inch alloy wheels. Rounding out the interior, the car would receive a TK custom steering wheel, shift knob and special gauge cluster and sports meters.
The crown jewel of this package comes in the form of an engine upgrade which would take the car from its usual 276 horsepower output to an impressive 400 horsepower, a figure that matches Nissan's own special 400R model, although not quite as rare as a TK "Full Spec R". Rounding of the engine package is a sports exhaust system. There were some exclusive options that can be added to a "Full Spec R" package, which this example is fitted with, such as the optional Tommykaira Sport seats, quick connect club harnesses, enhanced braking option (Brembo ARB), sports radiator as well as the carbon fiber taillight garnish.
Very original in presentation, the car is accompanied with its books and manuals, spare keys, some service paperwork from Japan, and Tommykaira brochures. Showing only 65,730 kilometers (40,842 miles) at the time of photography, this car is ready to be enjoyed for many more miles. Such a rare occurence to find an R33 GT-R tuned by one of the most official tuners as well as being equipped with their top tuning package. This package would be similar to having a Group-A car made for the street. Here lies an incredibly rare opportunity to acquire a well sorted, rare spec Skyline GT-R; they are particularly rare on these American shores where the Skyline-model was never sold new. Surely a future classic that will continue to gain in value.
