One of only 144 produced in the final year of production, this 1984 Ferrari 512 BB has traveled just 21,000 kilometers since new and presents in highly original condition. Ferrari built its first horizontally opposed 12-cylinder engine in 1964: a 1.5L Formula 1 engine with Lucas mechanical fuel injection, 11.0:1 compression and capable of producing 210 HP at 11,000 RPM. The flat-12’s first appearance in a Ferrari for the road did not come until 1971 with the unveiling of a prototype at that year’s Turin Auto Show.
Dubbed the 365 GT4 BB (for 365 grand touring 4-cam Berlinetta Boxer), it was the first midengine road car to carry a Ferrari nameplate and the first powered by a Boxer engine, in this case displacing 4.4L and rated at 360 HP. Its successor, the 512 BB, debuted in 1976 with the same four overhead cams and four three-choke Weber carburetors, but it now displaced a full 5.0L and had a lower rating of 340 HP at 6,800 RPM. Despite that lower output, the larger engine and refined drivetrain provided greater low-end torque and improved driveability.
The 512 carried several other refinements that improved overall performance, most notably a wider rear track, a longer nose with a chin spoiler, larger wheels for better handling and NACA ducts in the lower body sides to cool the engine compartment. The most refined version of the Berlinetta Boxer series arrived at the 1981 Frankfurt Auto Show in the form of the 512 BBi, signifying the use of Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and Digiplex electronic ignition for the smoothest performance yet, along with a dual-plate clutch for better city driving. The 512 BBi is widely regarded as the most desirable and collectible of the boxer series produced by Ferrari.
Offered in highly original and extremely clean condition including the original Rosso Corsa paint and Nero interior, this rare 1984 Ferrari 512 BBi combines the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injected 4.9L flat-12 Boxer engine with a gate-shifted 5-speed manual transmission, and it has received a comprehensive engine-out service. Optioned with the very desirable Daytona-style bucket seats and a Pioneer AM/FM cassette sound system, it includes the all-important original books and tool kit and extensive documentation from new including records, original EPA and DOT documentation and photos from its engine-out service.
Believed to be one of the few remaining completely original examples, this 512 BBi has been meticulously cared for and serviced its entire life and will make for a very special addition to any collection, as well as a worthy Ferrari Club of America award candidate.
