The Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer (BB) was built by the noted firm from 1973 to 1984, but examples like the 1983 512i are considered the pinnacle of the design. The BB designs all featured a mid-engine V-12, and the 512 designation came from the 5.0L (301.6 CI) displacement coupled with the number of cylinders in the flat-mounted engine. Designed by Pininfarina’s Leonardo Fioravanti, the BB line was the first mid-engined 12-cylinder road car to be launched by Ferrari— the first being the 365 GT4 BB—and the predecessor to the Testarossa line.
The car here is one of 1,007 512i examples built from 1981-84, which master builder Sergio Scaglietti would later wistfully note were the last Ferraris built entirely by hand. The car shows 5,637 original miles, calculated by the metric odometer reading of 9,071 kilometers, and has been subjected to a highly-disciplined nut-and-bolt rotisserie restoration and mechanical servicing to better-than-new condition. Completed in 2017 by Exclusive Motor Cars in Los Angeles, California, an estimated more than $300,000 was invested in the effort.
Moreover, this car is the rare factory Zegna Edition, which features wool cloth interior accents designed by Ermenegildo Zegna, making it especially attractive as an investment. Power comes from the naturally aspirated 4,942cc/335 HP flat-12 engine, for which Bosch K-Jetronic CIS fuel injection created the reason for the “i” designation. It is backed by a 5-speed manual gearbox. Using an independent-suspension design with coil springs assisted in overall nimble maneuverability, with 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes on hand to slow down from the estimated 173 MPH top speed. This remarkable supercar is painted silver with a black interior and striped cream-toned Zegna upgrade option.
It has the power windows that were part of all BB road cars. Riding on Cromodora wheels with Michelin TRX tires and complete with a comprehensive service history, this exceptional automobile is destined for ownership by a determined buyer.
