BMW has periodically juiced interest in its road cars by producing one-off styling exercises, but when it rolled out the Z7 concept car designed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the classic 507 roadster, its reception by the public was overwhelming. The best news was that the car was designed from the start with production in mind, and few changes were required to deliver the resulting limited-edition Z8 roadster to fruition. The Z8 is not only classically beautiful in overall shape and detail; it is possessed of shocking performance that overshadowed even Ferrari’s contemporary 360 Modena, until then the benchmark for exotics around the world.

The Z8 employs the M5’s potent 5.0L/394 HP V-8 engine, 6-speed manual transmission and limited slip differential, as well as some 5- and 7-series suspension pieces. At 500 pounds less than the M5, it flies to a 4 second 0-60 MPH time and a governed top speed of 155 MPH. Its cleanly styled bodywork clearly evokes the original 507 with its twin-nostril front grille and uniquely shaped front fender vents, but the interior comes in for special notice with its retro detailing.

The dash is one long painted plastic piece that suggests the steel dashes of yore; the leather wrapped steering wheel is a modern interpretation of the old banjo style wheel, and the instruments are mounted in a single center-located pod like many Fifties-era European cars. This 2002 BMW Z8 is one of approximately 550 imported into the U.S. that year, and at just 12,645 miles presents in pleasingly as-new condition. Stratus Silver Metallic and a Black Nappa leather interior make a fine pairing nicely completed with Silver-painted 18-inch alloy wheels and Yokohama rubber.

The generous list of features includes heated sport seats, tilt-telescopic steering column and heated auto-dimming mirrors, Harmon Kardon stereo, cruise control, pushbutton start and Xenon headlights. BMW’s advertising did not overstate it: the Z8 is the stuff that dreams are made of.
