J. Geils called this 1958 Giulietta Sprint Coupe his Street Rod. Geils enjoyed racing the highly modified car regularly, his last run being at Palmer Motorsports Park in Massachusetts. The 2.0L engine, 4-speed manual transmission and rear end were modified for the demands of performance driving, but as Geils would tell the story, he just carried on what the previous owner had begun. Geils added the slick vents to the rear windows, the Nardi steering wheel, the Boranni wire wheels and an upgraded drivetrain. Painted red with a matching interior, the car exudes a presence of racing attitude and is definitely a Street Rod of Italian attitude.
After World War II, Alfa Romeo’s first all-new entry was the 1900. Introduced for the 1950 model year, it brought two major advances to the world of motoring: unit-body construction and a fabulous DOHC 4-cylinder engine. Alfa Romeo had built a reputation for innovations like independent suspensions and DOHC engines for road cars, and as such, the 1900 was basically a chip off the old block. In 1954, Alfa Romeo moved forward from the 1900 with the Giulietta coupe, followed by a Berlina sedan and then a convertible. The Giulietta line was hugely successful for Alfa Romeo, not only as a fabulous seller to road-going customers, but for racers as well.
Designed by Franco Scaglione at Bertone, the coupe offered a relatively stoic demeanor with just the right amount of flair to balance out the style, while Pininfarina took a decidedly more outgoing dash while styling the convertible. By the time production ceased in 1965, 177,690 Giuliettas were built in total, marking it as a tremendously successful model for Alfa Romeo, and one that is still known as a great driver’s car. Geils was in the process of working on this Giulietta coupe at the time of his passing, leaving the restoration to the next owner, in much the same way Geils started his relationship with this spirited Alfa Romeo.
