America’s love affair with Alfa Romeo arguably began when Max Hoffman started importing them into his New York and Beverly Hills showrooms in the mid-1950s. The Giulia would debut in 1962, taking the baton from the Giulietta and bringing with it a more powerful and highly advanced 1.6L DOHC inline 4-cylinder engine that was smaller than most of the competition, but offered just as much power on paper. A lengthy wheelbase and taut suspension conspire for a fabulous ride quality without sacrificing handling and an overall sense of neutrality, one reason the Giulia was chosen as a study car by Mazda when the Miata was in development.
This 1962 Giulia is presented in dark gray with a black interior trimmed in red. The sparse brightwork appears excellent, and the jewel of an engine nestled snugly under the hood is properly finished in matte black with a slight crinkle and red-lettering “Alfa Romeo” at the helm. One of the original everyman Spiders, the Giulia introduced sport motoring to a number of people, turning regular folks into enthusiasts.
