While Porsche’s 911 is best known for its performance and its unique drivetrain layout, the basic 911 design adapted extremely well to changing buyer demands and increasingly strict regulations throughout its successive generations in production. This adaptability ensured the 911’s continued dominance, not only on race tracks and dealer showrooms, but also in the Porsche boardroom as some executives had thought the 911 was obsolescent by the mid-1970s. The 1974-75 “G Series” models were key to this successful adaptation process with their updated bodyshell and impact bumpers.
Porsche simplified the model lineup, with both the “T” and “E” dropped and replaced with the 911 Coupe and Targa in 150 HP tune (143 HP SAE net) as the base model—if such a term could ever apply to the 911. Most noticeably, the 911’s body was updated for compliance with new U.S. DOT 5 MPH crash-impact standards by Wolfgang Möbius, who masterfully created bumpers that met the new standards without ruining the 911’s already iconic looks. Rather than hiding their function, Möbius and his design team simply designed accordion-like covers for the new bumpers’ compression bars, thereby creating one of the 911’s longest-running design cues.
Tony Lapine also spearheaded a host of updated design cues that visually defined the 911 through 1989. Despite all the updates, the performance of the basic 911 was upheld, including a heady 130 MPH top speed. Offered with the odometer reading 20,677 miles, this 1974 Porsche 911 Coupe features power from an air-cooled 2.7L flat 6-cylinder engine. The engine and transaxle have been overhauled from the split case, and the engine is fitted with new Mahle pistons and cylinders. The 5-speed manual transmission sends the power to the road via a new clutch kit.
Finished in Sepia Brown over a tan interior, this first-year “G-Series” 911 is equipped with new windshield seals, front and rear, and rides on a set of restored Fuchs wheels. A long-term California car, this 911 is accompanied by California registrations and even the tire purchase receipt dated April 8, 1978, at 4,508 recorded miles, with these tires remaining on the car today.
