Raced by Paul Newman at the 2000 Road Atlanta Petit Le Mans, this 2000 Porsche 911 GT3 R is a historically significant competition car. The No. 15 Porsche 911 GT3 R was driven by Paul Newman, Michael Brockman and Randy Wars, and the car would remain in the stable of owner Dick Barbour throughout the 2000 season. Dick Barbour fielded a multi-car team in the ALMS (American Le Mans Series) that captured the 2000 GT class series championship, and car No. 15 was one of the cars in his Porsche GT3 R arsenal. Homologated for both FIA GT and ALMS competition, this Porsche GT3 R is a purpose-built race car coming out of the hallowed gates of Weissach, Germany.
Based on a Porsche 996 platform, the car features a full roll cage, fire suppression system, 4-wheel independent racing suspension, 4-wheel ventilated hydraulic disc brakes, BBS three-piece racing wheels mounted on Yokohama racing slicks, Recaro driving seat, Sparco steering wheel and Willans racing belts. The car has competed in the 2011 vintage races at Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca and Road America. It now presents in the same livery—silver with blue and yellow accents wearing Mobil 1 sponsorship—as raced by Newman, Brockman and Wars at the 2000 Road Atlanta Petit Le Mans. It retains its No. 15 identification on the doors and front trunk lid.
Although its days of professional racing are behind it, it is still eligible for both Porsche Club of America and Porsche Owners Club competition events. PCA is largely concentrated on the East Coast venues of Lime Rock, Road Atlanta and Daytona, and it offers a fiercely competitive racing program. Likewise, POC is largely concentrated in the Western region venues of Willow Springs, Laguna Seca and Buttonwillow, and it offers an equally intense racing format.
