When Maserati introduced the Ghibli in 1966, the world took notice – after several softer, slower years in style and sales, Maserati was back in the game with Ghibli. Impossibly low, the car measured roughly 15 feet long, and 6 feet wide, lending it tremendous presence. Under the hood was a 4.7L V-8 that produced 306 HP. Sporting a proper steel tube chassis, the sleek body was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro while working for Ghia, and presented remarkably aerodynamic and modern. The pop-up headlights were unique and en vogue, the wide grille enhanced the Ghibli's already wide look, and the Kamm tail fastback added drama to an already subtly dramatic design.
Inside, passengers rode in comfort with air conditioning, an adjustible steering wheel, full leather upholstry, electric windows, adjustible seats, huge headrests, heated rear window, remarkable visibility, and, thanks to the larger stature of the car, entry, exit, and seating position was fantastic. In 1969, Maserati offered the Ghibli SS, fit with a larger, dry sump 4.9L V-8 good for 335 HP. The Ghibli was good for over 160 MPH, and 0-60 in about 6 seconds, and quickly outsold Ferrari and Lamborghini. On offer here is a 1971 Ghibli SS in Maserati Red with White Connolly leather interior.
The 4.9L DOHC V-8 is fed by four Weber 48 DCNL carburetors, and linked to a 5-speed manual transmission. It features independent front suspension, coil springs, double wishbones, anti-roll bar, ridgid axle with radius arms, semi-elliptical leaf springs, and hydraulic four-wheel disc brakes. Presented extremely well, this desirable 4.9 Ghibli SS provides collectors an opportunity to acquire an exotic Italian icon in a beautiful color combination.
