The name offers drama and historical significance, something which bolstered Geils’ interest in the Lancia Flaminia. Sporting an aluminum body sculpted by Carrozzeria Touring, it is known as the Superleggera, or super light, a special kind of car for the discerning enthusiast. Lancia contributed an astonishing amount of innovation to the automotive world, including the first V-4 engine and the first 5-speed transmission installed in a production car; the list of innovations goes on and on. Founded in 1906 by Fiat racing drivers Vincenzo Lancia and his friend, Claudio Fogolin, their first car was the Tipo 51, developed and road tested in 1907.
It offered 28 HP from a small 4-cylinder engine and an exceptionally high level of creature comforts and quality for the price range. Later, the Tipo 51 name would be changed to Alfa. It’s historical bits and engineering forerunners like these that attracted J. Geils to Lancia. Arguably one of the most beautiful, successful and versatile Lancias, the Flaminia replaced the next most popular Lancia, the Aurelia. It was named, like other Lancias, after a Roman road, in this case, Via Flaminia, one of the oldest and most important roads in Roman history. Powered by a 2.8L V-6 engine with three 2-barrel carburetors, the power is sent to the rear end via a 4-speed manual transmission.
Blue on tan, the brightwork absolutely sparkles and the entire combination is simply stunning. Passengers admiring the interior will adore the Nardi steering wheel and rally watches. Geils’ attraction to the Flaminia as the Lancia to own is testament to his study of Italian cars, as so many prefer the Deltas and the other rally-inspired cars from Lancia. However, Flaminia is one of those cars that defined Lancia as a maker of athletic road cars for enthusiasts, a car that built on the successes and accomplishments of Aurelia and improved the overall brand, which in turn made legendary cars like the Delta and Stratos possible.
