Introduced in 1959 to replace the Silver Wraith, Rolls-Royce revived a storied name when it created the Phantom V. Based on a conventional frame and separate body structure; it gave coachbuilders an ideal platform on which to create luxurious custom bodywork. There was no standard Rolls-Royce body for the Phantom V. Each was custom built by such firms as James Young, Hooper, Park Ward and others. One of the first to take advantage of the Phantom V was the Queen. Not surprisingly, in its ten years in production from 1959 through 1968, only 832 precious examples were built. Only one of them, as far as is known, was built with this body style.

This lavish and gorgeous 1962 Rolls-Royce Phantom V Limousine was built by Rolls-Royce to U.S. left-hand drive specifications and bodied by Mulliner Park Ward. It is a unique example, built as Rolls-Royce changed over to its new four-headlight Design 2003 style, but from the cowl forward it is bodied in the earlier Design 980 style for its first owner, C.V. Hickox. Rounded windshield corners and smaller rear quarter windows are characteristic of the later VA-series style, but the single headlights and front fenders with round marker lights are from the Design 980 series. Say what you like about the quad-headlight Design 2003, Hickox made his preferences known, a choice many Rolls-Royce owners would enthusiastically endorse.

Showing just 36,450 miles, it is finished in dark blue with a lighter shade of blue above the beltline and is luxuriously equipped as expected of one of the finest automobiles in the world. Its splendid interior is outfitted with factory air conditioning, electric windows, an electric division window, jump seats and recently redone wood trim elements. The gray leather in front and beige cloth in rear are both brand new and correct. Also included are the owner’s manual, original jack and air pump. A supremely elegant automobile, perhaps even more today than it was fifty years ago, the refinement, luxury and exclusivity of this Phantom V Limousine is unsurpassed.

It’s probably unique combination of single headlight front with VA-series passenger compartment makes it particularly significant, an opportunity to be the center of attention at pretty much any Rolls-Royce Owners Club gathering.
