Debuted at Geneva in March 1995, Porsche’s eagerly anticipated 993 Turbo 3.6 immediately captivated the motoring press and the company’s most demanding customers with cutting-edge specifications and massive performance. More than two decades later, it remains coveted by knowledgeable Porsche enthusiasts. At launch, the 993 Turbo 3.6 was featured in virtually countless magazine road-test reports, routinely achieving 0-100 KPH (62 MPH) acceleration times in just 4.4 seconds, en route to a 180 MPH top-end charge.
Featuring a 959-derived all-wheel drive system with an 80/20 rear/front torque split, the 993 Turbo 3.6 was powered by the M64/60 version of Porsche’s air-cooled flat-6 engine, force-fed by twin K16 turbochargers and twin intercoolers. Developing up to 408 HP at 5,750 RPM, depending upon the source consulted, it most importantly delivered 400 lb-ft of peak torque at just 4,500 engine revolutions. Improved road adhesion was afforded by special wider bodywork over that of the “standard” 911, allowing enlarged wheels and tires.
The 993-generation 911 Turbo is immensely collectible today as one the last air-cooled 911 models from Porsche and the first to feature all-wheel drive combined with a turbocharged engine. This original U.S.-specification car spent time in Japan, where it received its Rest of World (RoW) fender-mounted indicators and had the U.S. specification front rub strips removed. Featuring Bosch Motronic fuel injection, the potent turbocharged flat-6 engine routes the power to a 6-speed manual gearbox/rear transaxle and factory 40% locking differential. Stopping power is delivered by 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS, red-painted Brembo calipers and cross-drilled rotors.
Strikingly finished in Polar Silver with a black leather interior, the Turbo is comfortably equipped with heated power-adjustable front bucket seats, a power sunroof, the Hi-Fi sound package with 10 speakers and a six-disc trunk-mounted remote CD changer. Other choice features include Litronic headlights with washers, cruise control, power windows, tinted glass, a rear windshield wiper and defroster, power door locks, a Sony AM/FM/cassette radio, air conditioning and fog lights. Hollow-spoke “Turbo Twist” alloy wheels and a “Whale Tail” rear spoiler covering the intercooler serve notice of this historic, rare and highly optioned Porsche’s true intentions.
