While the development of the 6-cylinder 911 was lengthy, the basic design proved extremely adaptable to updates and upgrades. Remaining in production well beyond the most optimistic expectations of Porsche executives, the 911 also formed the basis of the company’s racing program after the 917 prototypes were rendered obsolete by FIA rule changes. While Detroit’s Big Three and Porsche’s European rivals struggled with varying degrees of success during the early 1970s to comply with tightening U.S. emissions regulations, Porsche’s engineering wizards managed to improve the 911’s performance.
Offsetting somewhat lower compression ratios favoring unleaded gasoline, Porsche raised engine displacement to 2.2 and then 2.4 liters (2341cc) by 1972. Mechanical fuel injection was added beginning in 1972 for examples of the 911T destined for the United States and certain Asian markets. In addition to the heightened performance offered by the 2.4L cars of 1972-73, the stronger Type 915 gearbox was utilized. Derived from that used by Porsche’s 908 racing cars, the new gearbox also introduced a more conventional “H” shifting pattern.
While the 911 “S” and “E” models may have carried higher power ratings, the 911T was a surprisingly strong performer with a remarkably wide and usable power band. Acceleration from rest to 60 MPH was achieved in just 8.0 seconds and top speed approached 130 MPH. In contrast to the high-strung 911S, Road & Track testers also found the 911T delivered exceptional drivability and all-around flexibility in real-world driving conditions. For those buyers seeking more, the 911T was available with all 911S options, except for the engine.
