A CCCA Full Classic, this 1939 Packard 1708 V-12 with touring cabriolet coachwork by Brunn qualifies as one of the rarest automobiles to carry the Packard nameplate. Sold through legendary Los Angeles Packard distributor Earle C. Anthony’s Wilshire Motors, , purchased new by Justice P. Seeburg of Seeburg Corporation (Seeburg Jukeboxes). Several Packard body suppliers had disappeared in the aftermath of the Great Depression, leaving a gap into which stepped Rollston of New York City and Brunn & Co. of Buffalo.
First seen on a Lincoln K chassis, Brunn’s touring cabriolet design was an interesting reversal of the town-car theme featuring an enclosed front roof section with skylights above the windshield and an opening Landaulet-style rear top section. The last of the Packard Twelves and the most advanced, 1939 models incorporated the 473 CI V-12 with Stromberg carburetion, a column-shifted 3-speed manual transmission, Safe-T-Flex independent front suspension, leaf-spring rear suspension and 4-wheel vacuum-assisted drum brakes. The Packard Twelve 1708 offered here is one of just two fitted with Brunn’s touring cabriolet coachwork in 1939.
Rolling on wide whitewalls on painted steel wheels decorated with chromed trim rings and caps, it is finished in dark green with contrasting pinstriping, its elegant coachwork featuring faired-in dual side-mounted spares in metal cases and accented with the controversially named “Cormorant” radiator mascot and a rear luggage rack. Among its unique passenger-compartment features are a roll-down divider window, a Jaeger clock set into the exquisite rear-dash woodwork and a rear-mounted radio with controls set into the right armrest.
A beautiful restoration that was performed by the famed restorers, CoachCraft on Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles and it remains in very attractive condition, this incredibly rare Packard is well-suited to a wide variety of club and touring events.
