This 1934 Packard 1005 V-12 Club Sedan is one of 960 V-12 Packards produced that year. A CCCA Full Classic, it was the recipient of a comprehensive, sympathetic frame-off restoration. Faced with the dual threats of economic depression and rising competition from other manufacturers, in 1932, Packard boldly introduced a V-12 engine. In 1933, Packard overhauled its styling and chassis design as part of a program to reduce costs and add more perceived value. Packards built for 1933 offered a quieter, smoother ride, better body insulation and ventilation, driver-adjustable Ride Control, adjustable damping and vacuum-assisted Bendix drum brakes.
The V-12 models were split into two lines: the 1005 built on a 142-inch wheelbase, and the 147-inch wheelbase 1006. This emphasis on improved quality and the marvelous power of the V-12 engine left no doubt that the 1933 Packard Tenth Series V-12s were highly refined, thoroughly developed and manufactured to the highest quality-control standards. This 1933 Packard 1005 Club Sedan beautifully illustrates that fact in supremely elegant style. Its handsome Dark Pewter paint is complemented with wide whitewall tires on bright yellow-painted wire wheels wearing chromed trim rings and Packard-script center caps.
Beneath the uniquely sculpted hood is the famed Packard 445/160 HP V-12 engine mated to the standard 3-speed manual transmission. Exterior accessories include the signature chromed Swan radiator mascot, fender-mounted lamps, chromed dual horns and a center-mount Pilot Ray articulated driving light. Finished in Light Brown corduroy fabric, the Club Sedan’s roomy interior features gorgeous burled-wood dash and doorsill accent panels and a driver-focused instrument cluster with Waltham gauges. While the V-12 Packard did little to boost the company’s fortunes, examples such as this proved it among the grandest automobiles of the period and a genuine American classic.
