Walter Chrysler was brought to the Maxwell-Chalmers car company to restructure the company, similar to what he had done at Willys-Overland. Ending production in 1923, Chrysler took over the company and rebranded it in his name. The first Chrysler was introduced in early 1924 and impressed people with many advanced features, such as rubber engine mounts to reduce vibration, a carburetor air filter, an oil filter, hydraulic brakes, full-pressure lubrication and high-compression engines, to name a few. Chrysler also developed the rigid rim, which kept a deflated tire from disconnecting from the wheel, a design that was eventually adopted by the entire auto industry.
The innovations and smart price positioning earned Chrysler the number two spot in sales by 1936, a spot it held until 1949. This 1931 Chrysler Deluxe Convertible Coupe is equipped with a 282 CI inline 8-cylinder engine with a floor-mounted 3-speed manual transmission.
