The BMW Z8 is unquestionably one of those dream machines that a car company builds just for enthusiasts. Emerging from the Z07 concept car, the Z8’s sleek and curvaceous body combined with an open-top platform was certainly something special, ranking as one of the most beautiful designs of the new century. The exotic Z8 had styling roots going back to the 1950s BMW 507 Roadster, a car that helped put BMW on the map as a manufacturer of fabulous sports cars. This particular Z8 has been in the same California family since new and shows only 19,000 miles on the odometer.
The shimmering black paint and aluminum body panels show immaculately, and the black leather interior is of similar quality, along with seats, door panels, carpeting, switchgear, and a unique steering wheel and dashboard that look pristine. Built in Munich, Germany, on June 26, 2000, this example is No. 188 of only 317 produced for the 2000 model year. Under the hood is a 4,941cc V-8 engine that produces 394 HP mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, a drivetrain borrowed from the proven and much-loved BMW M5 sport sedan. Reports of the day lauded the Z8 for its silky-smooth transmission and powerful V-8.
One magazine went so far as to say it “had 427 Cobra swagger with modern sophistication.” The Z8 could sprint from 0 to 60 MPH in about 4.6 seconds, eclipse the quarter mile in 13 seconds at 110 MPH, and top out at a governor-limited 155 MPH. A wonderful part of this BMW sports car was that its drivers didn’t have to press the limits; it was a machine that was perfectly happy cruising the open road at lesser speeds. This beauty is equipped with heated sport seats, pushbutton start and the BMW-branded Motorola flip phone. The Z8 owners and service manuals, hardtop and hardtop stand, and service records are included.
An instant classic, the stunning Z8 has only gained appeal over time, and it’s a styling statement of the prowess of the BMW brand.
