Celebrating both 40 years of business and three consecutive World Rally Manufacturer Championship wins in 1995, 1996 and 1997, Subaru built 424 Impreza 22b STis, almost all for the Japanese market, except for 24 that were split between the United Kingdom and Australia. Never officially imported into the U.S., the 2.5RS was the closest thing North America got to the 22b. This is Serial No. 072 and was originally purchased in the UK by a doctor to use as a club racer. The current owner imported it to the U.S. in 1999. Built to compete at the 2000 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the car qualified and was driven by David Donner as Car No. 02.
However, two-thirds of the way up the hill, the car suffered a fuel pump failure, with the car ultimately receiving a DNF. Subaru’s race team was present at the hill climb and assisted in repairing the car. Since that competition, it’s been used as a dealership display, leading a pampered life and retaining its original World Rally Blue paint and No. 02 Pikes Peak Livery, and it rolls on factory 17-inch gold BBS alloy wheels and a set of low-profile tires. The turbocharged 2.2L/280 HP flat 4-cylinder engine and 5-speed manual transmission are tempered by Brembo 4-wheel disc brakes with black calipers and cross-drilled rotors.
An STi carbon fiber strut tower bar has been installed to assist in stability and reduce flex. The two-tone black and blue interior features an added roll cage, a fire-suppression system, factory bucket seats with Sabelt safety harnesses, a MOMO steering wheel and white-faced gauges (though the speedometer is inoperable). Some interior pieces have been removed and are included in the sale. With upgraded headlights, this rare and celebratory Subaru is a seldom seen car that is sure to catch the attention of Subaru enthusiasts.
