Over the course of a nine year production run, 516 Phantom Vs rolled off the line, sporting a dizzying array of body styles all built with the express purpose of providing the utmost luxury to their lucky occupants — most of whom were unbothered with the task of driving, preferring, naturally, to be cossetted in the sumptuous rear passenger compartments.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
This stately Phantom V, chassis 5LBV41 is offered with copies of factory information regarding its build and delivery. It can be confirmed as being of formal design by Park Ward Ltd and carrying features such as a center console to the rear division as well as full occasional seats for two.
Also on file is a Schoellkopf card, which denotes that the original owner was Douglas C. Sinclaire of Lamport Hall, Brielle, New Jersey, who took delivery in February 1961. On his death, in May 1966, Douglas Cumming Sinclaire was described in the Princeton University alumni as being in the porcelain and insurance business, an interesting combination, and it was noted that he had retired to Lamport Hall after the war. His final years had certainly been cosseted if his travels were in a Rolls-Royce Phantom!
By May 1970, the car was offered through
The Flying Lady
by Mrs. D.C. Sinclaire of Brielle, New Jersey, where it is stated to be one of 6, and finished in Dark Blue with a beige interior. There are no other records of ownership charted with Rolls-Royce Owner's Club and so the next chapters of its life remain to be discerned. We believe that it was acquired by the current owners from Denmark.
Viewed today, the car is now a very much aged restoration. Its former blue paintwork has clearly been refurbished some time ago to the present burgundy, while the interior has the appearance of being original but reflects its age also, with some loss of color to the leading edges of the seats, creasing and cracking from drying out. The rear interior wood veneers are in poor condition.
Matching the aesthetic conditions, the car has not been used in recent years and is certainly scruffy, but we are pleased to report that it has been made to run in preparation for the sale and should respond well to further recommissioning prior to being returned to the road.
