With the underpinnings of the contemporary Silver Shadow, the Camargue coupe was strikingly different from any preceding Rolls-Royce model, and closer in concept to the Bentley Continental.
Original U.S. list prices were approximately $148,000 making Camargues perilously expensive and in today's money, they would eclipse the cost of almost all new cars. Although in production for 11 years until 1986, some 530 were built. Of those, a mere 30 entered the U.S.A. each year even though the bulk of production was intended for overseas customers and the majority built with left-hand drive.
THE CAR OFFERED
Completed in the final months of production for the model, this Camargue was ordered new by Mortimer Grossman of tony Manhasset, New York. According to records from the Rolls-Royce Foundation, which includes copies of factory records, the Rolls was finished in Acrylic Georgian Silver with a Black Everflex roof and Double Brick Red fine lines over an interior resplendent in Black leather with Brick Red piping and matching carpets in the same colors. Fully loaded from the start, unlike today there wasn't a need to load up on options.
Delivered new in August of 1986, the car was sparingly used, accumulating about 1000 miles a year. In 1991 the Rolls moved to its second owner Chicago, Illinois. Three years later, Gary and Louis Witham of Camden, Maine acquired the car, showing it at Rolls-Royce Owners Club events in the area. The car was sold Bonhams Brookline Auction in May of 2006 to its next owner, a dealer in Oregon who swiftly sold it to southern California from where the current owner acquired the car in the Spring of 2018.
Recorded on the CARFAX report has having 37,691 miles in July of 2007, only 24 more miles have been added in the last 16 years. Given the long term lack of use, mechanical recommissioning is recommended prior to use. Complete with the aforementioned copies of factory records as well as original books and manuals, this Rolls will no doubt delight once it is properly serviced.
