The ultimate lightweight special edition version of Porsche’s 993-series 911, the 1995-96 Porsche 911 Carrera RS lived up to its RS Rennsport name as a laser-focused homologation special for entry into the GT3 and GT4 classes of the BPR Global GT Series. An international endurance-racing series, the BPR Global GT Series succeeded the former World Sportscar Championship that ended in 1992 and preceded the FIA GT Championship, continuing and advancing one of the greatest forms of motorsport.
Based on Porsche’s 911 Carrera Cup car, which featured a seam-welded and stiffened 911 Carrera 2 body shell, the 911 Carrera RS included a stiffened chassis with welded seams, rolled wheel arches and useful aerodynamic enhancements. Powering the 911 Carrera RS was a naturally aspirated 3.8L/296 HP horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine featuring Bosch Motronic engine management and Porsche’s new Varioram variable-length intake system. Other race-worthy highlights included Porsche’s new 6-speed manual transmission, comprehensive revisions to the MacPherson-strut front and rear multi-link independent suspension and upgraded ventilated ABS disc brakes.
Three-piece, light-alloy “Speedline for Porsche” split-rim wheels including magnesium centers measuring 9 inches front and 11 inches rear by 18-inches in diameter with 235/40 and 285/35 tires. Enhanced aerodynamics included an aggressive rear wing maximizing downforce. Obsessive lightening measures reduced weight of the Carrera RS by 220 pounds to a targeted 2,800 pounds. Virtually any unnecessary weight-adding item was deleted, including central locking, power-adjustable seats, power windows and mirrors, air bags, the rear-window defroster and even the headliner.
Other measures included thinner window glass, an aluminum front boot lid and doors, lighter Recaro seats and lightweight interior door panels with traditional fabric pulls. Soundproofing was minimized, and even the customary headlight washers were removed. Just 274 of these awesome all-around performers were produced, including this striking Polar Silver example, offered with the odometer reading 50,613 kilometers (approximately 31,450 miles). Additional highlights include a black leatherette interior, Sport seats in black with gray center accents, drilled aluminum pedals, red brake calipers and the Clubsport Aero Package including an aggressive chin spoiler and tall rear wing.
