In 1939 the first Packard station wagons appeared in the fledgling Six model line, following other major automakers into that new and growing market. The company sold 500 station wagons that first year, and the popularity of the woody station wagon prompted them to tap the long-established Hercules Body Company of Evansville, Indiana, for its 1940 wagons in the 120 range and the new 110 lineup.
The 1940 Packard 110 models rode on a 122-inch wheelbase and were powered by the 245/100 HP flathead 6 engine, and while perceived as “downmarket” from full-sized Packards, they bore such upscale features as hydraulic brakes, Safe-T-Flex independent front suspension and the Handi-Shift column-mounted shifter. This superb 1940 Packard 110 Woody Sedan exhibits all the style and grace of the 110 in a nut-and-bolt restoration completed in 1996 that still impresses with its outstanding quality. The wood body presented by far the most challenging aspect of the restoration process.
A master wood worker labored for more than five years to hand-craft the birch and mahogany used in restoring the original Hercules-built body, whose glowing tones are the perfect complement to the car’s Maroon paint and brightwork. This example is equipped with the rare optional Econo-Drive overdrive, allowing the car to be driven at freeway speeds, and it certainly gets around; it won Best Stock Woody at the Doheny Woodie Show in 2006, was a Circle of Champions winner in the Packards International Grand Salon in October 2012 and took 2nd Place in the Prewar Closed Class at the 2013 Newport Beach Concourse d’Elegance.
