Evolved from the already-extreme McLaren Senna road car—so named to honour three-time Formula 1 World Champion and McLaren doyen Ayrton Senna—the exclusive 335 km/h, track-only Senna GTR was limited to just 75 examples. Its 825 PS, twin-turbocharged V-8 engine operated in conjunction with a carbon fibre monocoque chassis and advanced active aerodynamics; the latter, significantly, permitting some 1,000 kilograms of downforce to be generated at 250 km/h.
This Senna GTR—internal prototype designation ‘VP798’—was constructed at McLaren’s Woking factory in March 2019 as the first such example completed. Following an initial shakedown test at Sywell Aerodrome, it was readied for the model’s public debut at the 77th Goodwood Members’ Meeting in early April, where it was demonstrated by Ayrton’s nephew—ex-HRT, Renault, and Williams F1 driver Bruno Senna. As poignant moments go, few can surpass the sight of the iconic Senna crash helmet appearing behind the wheel of a McLaren at Goodwood, the circuit at which the team’s eponymous founder tragically perished some 49 years previously.
Following its successful Goodwood bow, ‘VP798’ underwent further development at McLaren’s Idiada testing facility near Barcelona, prior to additional testing and marketing engagements at Silverstone, Portimão, and the Goodwood Festival of Speed. At the latter, the car was entrusted to Bruno once again.
With its development phase complete, the prototype ‘VP798’ entered storage in November 2019. Its chassis is reported to have covered some 25,000 kilometres by this stage. Following a hiatus of 18 months, the car returned to Woking in May 2021 for sympathetic recommissioning, which included the fitment of a replacement development-specification Senna GTR powertrain and the renewal of its dampers, brake discs, and brake pads. Subsequently purchased by a Britain-based collector in June 2021, it was later acquired by the consigning owner.
Boasting a direct link to the Senna family and genuine McLaren “ex-Works” status, ‘VP798’ represents arguably the most significant of all Senna GTRs. These factors—in addition to its undoubted hypercar credentials—all but guarantee its collector-grade potential for the future.

Werk in Woking als erster Senna GTR fertiggestellt. Nach ersten Freigabefahrten auf dem Sywell Aerodrome nördlich von Northampton wurde der Wagen für die offizielle Vorstellung beim 77. Goodwood Members‘ Meeting Anfang April fertiggemacht, wo ihn der ehemalige HRT, Renault und Williams Formel 1-Rennfahrer und Ayrtons Neffe Bruno Senna fuhr. Ein besonderes Erlebnis war es, den berühmten legendären Senna Helm hinter dem Lenkrad eines McLaren in Goodwood zu sehen, wo der gleichnamige Markengründer 49 Jahre zuvor tragisch ums Leben gekommen war.
Nach dem erfolgreichen Goodwood Debut wurde VP798 in McLarens Testzentrum in Isiada nahe Barcelona getestet, bevor weitere Tests und Marketingeinsätze in Silverstone, Portimão, Portugal, und beim Goodwood Festival of Speed folgten. Beim Letzteren wurde der Wagen wieder Bruno Senna anvertraut.
Nach dem Abschluss der Entwicklungsphase wurde VP798 im November 2019 nach Berichten zufolge mit einer Laufleistung von 25.000 km auf dem Chassis eingelagert. Nach einer eineinhalbjährigen Pause kehrte der Wagen im Mai 2021 für eine vorsichtige Überholung ins Werk nach Woking zurück, wo ein neuer Senna GTR Entwicklungsmotor eingebaut, sowie Dämpfer, Bremsscheiben und -beläge ersetzt wurden. Im Juni kaufte ihn dann ein britischer Sammler und später der heutige Besitzer und Einlieferer.
Mit seiner Verbindung zur Familie Senna und seinem Stellenwert als echter „Ex Works“ McLaren ist VP798 wohl der bedeutendste aller Senna GTRs. In Verbindung mit seinem unzweifelhaften Supercarstatus ist ein hoher Sammlerwert so gut wie garantiert.
